TolkienLegend3In the year 1600 of the Second Age, Sauron stood atop the highest window of Barad-dûr, seeking the door of Sammath Naur, which now raged with molten fire and looked back at him like a great eye carved into the side of the mountain. He knew the time was ripe, the three Rings of the Elven Kings had been completed, the Seven Rings of the Dwarf Lords had been bestowed upon the Longbeards and the Rings of Men had been gifted to Nine Kings with a desire for power.

SammathNaur7Sauron came to Orodruin, the Mountain of Fire and there he entered the dark door of Sammath Naur, walking out upon the bridge over the Cracks of Doom. The Dark Lord called forth the molten fires from below and mixing them with rare metals, dark sorcery and his own blood, forged a ring of fire from the elemental heat within the dark chasm. And so Sauron, the Dark Lord of Mordor fashioned a Ring of unspeakable power. The great heat of it burned like fire, as he etched the ring with verse in the Black Speech.

Mount Doom rumbled… the skies darkened… the great cone erupted in fire as Sauron placed the One Ring upon his hand. The very foundations of the earth trembled with the power that radiated from the Dark Lord. A growing Shadow filled all the lands of Mordor.

Sauron was able to perceive each of the Rings of Power. The Elves immediately withdrew their Rings and hid them, sensing his treachery. The Seven Rings of the Dwarf Lords forged by the Sauron, could not however completely control the inscrutable will of the sons of Durin. So the Dark Lord used the natural greed of the Dwarves to try draw and them into evil, though many were able to resist his will for long years. The Nine Kings of Men were immediately ensnared by the will of Sauron, and each began slowly to fade, becoming wraiths of terrible power in his service.

So began the the long War between Sauron and the Elves, as they fought over the power of the Rings! Engaged in ceaseless battle with the Dark Lord, the Elves were unable to over come the power of the Ring. It was not until the might of Númenor was allied with the power of the Elves, that Sauron was defeated at the very feet of Mount Doom. It was there under the shadow of Orodruin, that Sauron greatest weakness was exposed, when the Ring was cut from his hand and he was vanquished… but not destroyed!

As long as the Ring survived… so shall Sauron, until the ending of the world. Such was the Power wrought in the fires Sammath Naur, deep within the Cracks of Doom!

“They are one, the Ring and the Dark Lord.”
